Reviews
lathe-of-heaven

The reviews sure are all over the place for this film. The negative ones are REAL negative. Hmmm... Well, FWIW all I can do is give you my impressions about the movie. Just an added note (this was after I carefully looked at the ratings of other reviews) YES, I also do NOT like biased or planted '10 star' reviews. However, I notice on the other end of the scale that EVERY negative review has a disproportionately high vote... 5/5, 8/8, 10/10, 25/26. Strangely consistent, wouldn't you say? And yet EVERY positive review is rated EXTREMELY poorly... Does that seem unbiased and fair to you...? Looks like deliberate sabotage to me. I feel that neither extreme is very pretty...Anyway... First off, I want to explain that the reason why I am rating this film as a '6' is primarily because of the last 5 minutes or so. In my lowly and wretched opinion, I really felt that it was very poorly done . However, if the ending had been up to par with the rest of the movie, I would have probably given it a '7'And, although I ***REALLY*** did NOT like the first 5 minute intro or the little $hit child telling the background story (GEEZ... could he have been more irritating...?) once the main, modern part got going I was surprisingly impressed with the quality of the film and the way it was directed. I personally was most impressed with the cinematography and the sound design. I felt these elements were quite strong and really added to the atmosphere and creepy mood of the movie. I like it when modern day Horror films get more aggressive with the soundtrack. Nothing stupid, but just using sounds very effectively to heighten the Supernatural mood and the suspense and tension of the story. I really felt that the director did a very, very good job with that (a true throwback to older Horror films. A very good example of this is the VERY rare 1973 Telefilm 'A COLD NIGHT'S DEATH' {which I happen to have :} where you just basically have 2 guys alone at an Arctic research station where all the people are dead. DAMN good sound design! Typical of Horror films made at that time)The acting too was surprisingly very realistic and believable. Especially with all the family Drama involved, in most cases with films like this, the heightened emotions and acting usually is pretty cringe-worthy and awful. But, I must say that although I was holding my breath just WAITING for some character to grind on my nerves, I actually found the performances overall to be quite good. The story was pretty basic. Nothing wildly innovative here. Just a simple, fairly familiar Ghost Story, and for the most part I genuinely felt that it was put together very well. For me personally, particularly with this kind of Supernatural Horror film, MOOD and ATMOSPHERE are absolutely VITAL above all else. And, I truly felt that the director did this quite a bit better than most other similarly themed films.BUT... and this is indeed a VERY BIG BUT like Mariah Carey's... the way he decided to end the film and wrap up the story just about COMPLETELY undid all the excellent work and effort and nice atmosphere that they worked SO hard up to that point to create. Very sad... I am genuinely puzzled that with all the very good thought and care that, to me anyway, was clearly put into the atmosphere and the quality of the film to make it as believable and as chilling as possible, to end it in such a 'WTF are they thinking...' kind of way baffles me completely. Also, as in many cases when I review films like this where there are strong Supernatural themes, I absolutely MUST emphasize that if you are the kind of person who just does NOT buy into films like this and if you like your Horror more 'Realistic', etc., then chances are that you will NOT like this movie at all. This film is pretty much ONLY for those (like me) who can EASILY suspend disbelief and EASILY find yourself totally engulfed in the Ghostly and Supernatural elements of a story like this. I'm thinking that possibly a number of the extremely negative reviews here that just say general, broad things like 'This is crap' and 'totally stupid', etc. could simply be from people who just do not care for Ghost stories or Supernaturally themed films. I don't know...Anyway... What I would personally suggest is that IF you are the kind of person who REALLY can get into films like this, and... ***VERY*** importantly... if you can kind of try to ignore the really $hitty 1st and last 5 minutes and just sit back and enjoy the rest of the film, which I felt was done very well, then you might have a 'ghost' of a chance of enjoying this movie...

Don't get me wrong, i'm British and i like nothing more than watching a home-grown movie. But this... I don't know where to start, the acting is like watching a school play, over exaggerated movements which are comical, the dialogue is stilted and amateur. Some members of the cast are supposed to be school children and plainly look about 25, it's insulting and unbelievable. Technically it's.... well i don't know, it's..... not technical at all. The dialogue is all captured using ambient microphones, you can barely hear the dialogue in places due to traffic, bird song or the wind. The whole thing is shot in what appears to be a lovely country house but whomever actually owns it (probably one of the producers, director or 'mate of') has obviously blown all their money purchasing or renting the property because inside the refurbishment is as poor as the acting. Who the hell would spend 3 million on a house and then put a 'Beko' fridge in it? The floor coverings, doors, door frames and skirting boards are straight out of a 90's new build house and not fitting at all with the period of the house. All in all i'd say the first 1,000 people who rated this movie are friends and family of the people who worked on it, certainly not the people who worked on it themselves because i doubt that would amount to more than 35 including the cast. What Budget? What script? What lighting? what score? What sound engineer? It's like something produced by First year Bradford film School students, and that's an insult to Bradford Film School students as to date, they've not produced anything this appalling to my knowledge

If you enjoy slow British haunted house movies, like I do, then this is a cool little film. Very ambitious. But I can't recommend it to civilians without qualifying it as a slow paced British manor horror. Spooky cinematography and sound design which works at times, and is effective at building a tone. The story isn't so great but they rarely are. Its a decent movie for watching at night, in the dark when its raining. The acting is better than average. Like I said, its ambitious, you can tell the filmmakers were ambitious. THis isn't a mailed in Low Budget SyFy style picture. This movie tries to be a real film. I don't know anything about the production, I rented the DVD from Redbox based on the title and cover art. There have been a few movies kinda like Witching Tree that I have seen over the past year or two. The Woman In Black and the sequel, I guess, and I just saw a movie on Netflix called Altar. I liked all of them. If you don't like those you probably wont like Witching Tree

I read a couple of reviews, but I agree now with another reviewer that they MUST somehow be connected to the film! They MUST have seen another film, as this is not the film I watched! It's like a bad episode of Eastenders.Unbelievable story line - Husband is in a coma, so wife decides buy a huge 600 year old farm to keep her pigs,(Really?) where there is a tree in the woods (By the way, the tree looked about 60 years old, if it was 600+ years old, I am sure it would have been bigger and wider. By the way, it is NOT the tree on the cover of the DVD. They couldn't even be bothered to find a decent tree, which is supposed to be central to the whole story!)Very short "Kids around the campfire telling stories" set up to let you know that a "Wronged woman" was hanged for witchcraft, and has been killing kids ever since.. Then, usual run of the mill sequences of 'turn round and there's either no one there, or there is someone there, wide eyed, covered with blood and their tongues hanging out, with sudden loud crashing sound to try and make you jump...' Insidious did it so much better and creepier...Very poor acting, poor clichéd supposed scary moments (I was expecting a cat to suddenly jump out and squeal ala Stephen King) it is that bad.Dad in a coma, can presumably "see" what is going on at home, and after how many months, suddenly starts talking, saying, "Jake... House...Jake..." so the daughter calls the nurse, who tells her, "They can tend to speak quite a bit at this stage, but it's just a reaction from the nerves..." Really? Coma patients suddenly start talking, and it's a sign that they're getting WORSE!!?? I got this hoping to watch it with the family, we really tried to like it and watch it, but we turned it off after 45 minutes as it was THAT bad!
