College (2008): Dir: Deb Hagen / Cast: Drake Bell, Andrew Caldwell, Kevin Covais, Haley Bennett, Ryan Pinkston: Vulgar teen comedy about experience. Three high school seniors decide to check out the college scene in preparation for the following year. Instead of an exciting time they become the brunt of many cruel jokes launched by a senior frat house. Director Deb Hagan is not given a screenplay of any worth. Perhaps a viewing of National Lampoon's Animal House might have better inspired her. Drake Bell suffered a breakup and decides to add more excitement to his life. If that is truly the case then he would have starred in a different film than this. Perhaps this film is part of the countless cruel jokes he had to endure. Andrew Caldwell plays a loud and obnoxious friend and that is his basic function from start to finish. Kevin Covais is steered by his parents but it is clear that he will be coaxed into rebelling, which leads to a job interview gone wrong, and a session involving puke and a toilet. Haley Bennett plays the standard romantic interest who does little more than look stunning and somehow end up with the hero whom in reality she wouldn't be caught in public with. Ryan Pinkston makes this a career move towards more adult, but not more mature roles. None of them are any better off in the end. It aims low with drunkenness, vomiting and other lewd acts. Score: 3 / 10

Really, when I read the reviews I decided do not watch the movie. But yesterday I watched this in TV and it is not so bad movie. Perhaps I would not buy this in DVD or pay to watch this. But it is not so bad to see one day in TV. It is not the best movie, that is clear. I think the main problem is the protagonist. I agree with some reviews that said that he is so annoying (and bad playing) that you do not want to take their side. I do not know who though that Drake can play this character. Zero charisma for this type of character. The antagonists for another side, they played very good their characters. You enjoy the revenge because you dislike them more than because you love the protagonists. Great job of Nick Zano. I did not recognize him first. After to read he was the same nice younger love of the character of Cox in the fist episodes of Cougar town (I realized that for IMDb), that show me he is a good actor. Because the two are so different characters and he plays the two very goods (College and Cougar Town). Scrip: not so bad. Actors: protagonist awful Antagonists very good job.

The film is about three high school seniors who visit a college campus to have a good time. One of the students, Kevin is there for an interview for a scholarship. The three end up staying at a fraternity house instead of with a weirdo in the dorms. The frat boys treat them like pledges and humiliate & haze them. The three have some wild fun, hook-up with some girls and get revenge on the frat boys, becoming better friends in the process. This movie was totally different from other college movies such as Animal House (which is a classic) or Van Wilder. The story is unique in that the main characters are high school students completely out of their element on a college campus. Unlike most college movies the main characters were actually college-age (Caldwell & Covais were both 19 when this was filmed, Bell was 21 but looks 17). The acting was pretty good by most, Andrew Caldwell was hilarious. There were plenty of good laughs & you find yourself guessing what craziness will happen next. In addition to being very funny there was also lots of eye-candy and plenty of partial nudity.

I believe this movie to have funny moments and I definitely laughed many times, but I could also see why people wouldn't like it. The same old generic college frat party movie with the same punchlines over and over downplay what I really enjoyed about this movie. I wasn't really a fan of Drake Bell until this movie, not because he acted particularly well, but because he finally seemed to be himself in the role. In the bloopers you can see him acting like how he would normally act outside of the Nickolodeon life. Maybe it's an opportunity for him to broaden his future roles. Overall the movie was enjoyable to watch when I couldn't sleep late at night, so if college frat movies are your thing and you don't have anything to do it might just be a better movie than it was for many of the people taking the time to write the reviews.
