Circle the Wagen Trailers

Circle The Wagen is a feature-length buddy/road-trip/docu-dramedy that follows Dave, an idealistic adventurer and automotive ne'er-do-well, and his convivial co-pilot Charlie on their journey down Route 66 in a baby blue 1972 VW bus. Through mishaps and murals, gasoline baths and breakdowns the two discover a teeming underground of vintage VW diehards willing to help save "The Croc" from the scrap heap and rally her beleaguered owner on to California.

This film was a treat to view. It chronicles the journey of two friends across the country in a VW bus that was purchased sight-unseen in a dismal state of repair. This film is accessible to people without any knowledge of VWs, so don't think that it is a high-context esoteric experience only enjoyable to the initiated. There are animated sequences that mesh well with the film, and the production value of the entire film is excellent. The director has done an excellent job placing this story in the greater context of VW culture, as well as American society as a whole. I look forward to seeing future works from this filmmaker.

Circle the Wagon was engaging and entertaining the whole ride. The editing was tight, with arcs evenly paced throughout. I'm really hoping that this film makes it through and becomes available online or at other film festivals so I can share it with friends and family (and stop trying to describe it!). It IS a buddy film (for one) and the friendship between the protagonists and the friendships they develop is a special aspect of the film. You don't have to know about VW Bus culture to become engaged in this film, and I don't think the filmmakers knew that much about VWs in the beginning either. Rather, this is a really funny documentary about the humanity, humility and hilarity when you follow your crazy dream.Having filmmaker friends I've learned that "the unexpected" is really what makes a documentary and it's what you hope for. Circle the Wagon got that element of surprise--it's the best movie I've seen all year.

After waiting 2 years to view the final cut, i must say, that wait was Entirely worth it. Who knew, that after purchasing an obviously dubiously maintained, 40+ year-old, air-cooled VW bus on the internet, sight unseen, for less than $800 ( wait. What ?!?! ) and attempting to drive said conveyance half-way across the country on old U.S. Route 66, without even marginal previous mechanical aptitude, that the end result would be a wonderful and bonding experience for three CA college buddies; regardless that this adventure would be considered without any modern creature comforts such as air-conditioning, at least a marginally working heater, adjustable seats ( or even proper seat padding ), CD or DVD player, ABS brakes (-ha!- ), power steering ( or power Anything ! ), etc., etc. etc. ,,, you get the idea. Not bloody Likely, one might imagine. Amazingly enough, Dave was able to convince Charlie and Ryan that this was a "Great road trip documentary idea'. Never mind the challenging 'issues' which presented themselves on virtually every day of the voyage, and the continuing detective work to determine how the trip could even continue. And, after eventually abandoning all hope at a roadside 66 motel in Tucumcari, NM for 4 years, that they would return to the chaotic demise of the aptly named Croc bus and continue on, is nothing short of pure cojones, amigo's y amiga's ! If you enjoy drama, comedy, adventuring day-by-day relying on the kindness of strangers, and even a few moments of terror, then this is one film you will not want to miss.

After speaking with Charlie on the phone regarding reservations, I most definitely wanted to see the film. As my shift at the motel ended 90 minutes before viewing time I wandered over to the theatre to see about getting in. I was one of the lucky ones! Charlie? I was willing to pay for my ticket... Thank you again. What a wonderful movie! Once I made it back to my computer and logged on to Facebook, I sent a message to my friends asking them if they had the chance to please go to see "Circle the Wagen" and briefly explained what it was all about. Many asked right then and there where it would be shown; so I'm hoping in the not too distant future they will be able to view it. It was so good I'm thinking you guys just might have a future in this movie making stuff.
