Vaughn (Jack Lowden) and Marcus (Martin McCann) go do some hunting in rural Scotland. Vaughn accidentally shoots a boy. Marcus shoots the father and leads the effort to cover up their crimes. The locals grow suspicious of the two outsiders when their family members are presumed missing. This is solid brutalist B-movie material. The main problem is that I don't find either of the leads appealing and pose no rooting interest for me. The villagers are a bit of Straw Dogs but they are right to be suspicious of these villains. The tension just isn't there since I don't care whether these guys are discovered. It's Matt Palmer's directing/writing theatrical debut. He shows good technical skills. This would be better if Vaughn could be a more appealing character. Tension would be much higher if I actually cared.
... View MoreThere is not much wrong with this film and it deserves a better score than what it is resting on just now.Two lads decide to go for a hunting trip in the north of Scotland before one of them becomes a father. When hunting a deer it all goes horribly wrong resulting in a confrontation with their emotions, morals and a close community who slowly become more suspicious of them. All performances are very convincing and the plot is simple yet believable. It's a great Scottish thriller that will have your hands arching over your mouth in shock.
... View MoreWhile the concept of friends having a dreadful, life-altering experience in the woods has been done time and time again, this go at it isn't bad by any means. The suspense of this movie is what kept my eyes from straying. There were moments when I was unconsciously holding my breath. And while the ending could be guessed if you watched a high volume of this particular genre, I was so caught up in the moment, I didn't want to guess and ruin the ending for myself. The characters were very rooted in reality. I found myself liking both the "good" and the "bad" guys. You understood why everyone did what they did. Everything just makes sense. The acting can be a little cheesy at times, but the cheesy moments don't take away or add from the real meat of this movie. So those tiny moments can be brushed aside or forgotten. Overall, the acting was very grounded and believable. The camera work is generally pretty average. However, there are a couple moments were shoots were so incredibly pretty and felt like they would never end. This moments surprised and pleased me.While the plot is nothing new, this movie is not another cheese fest that I'll easy forget within the hour. I am definitely glad I happened to switch this little gem on.
... View MoreTop notch acting and directing , and I probably would have given the film a 7, but I found the ending very unsatisfying. It was almost as if I wanted a second part to the story. I won't go further because I want this to be a spoiler free review. The ending felt rushed and the true consequences of the ending should have been explored a little more than a final one minute scene. I will say that I was deeply involved throughout the film, though it did have a couple times where it dragged a bit. I would ultimately recommend this film though, you won't be bored watching it.
