Bounty Killer put a smile on my face from ear to ear. I don't know when the last time I went into a movie blind and came out so satisfied. As for the plot - well in all honesty, there's just enough plot to keep the movie interesting. All you really need to know is that in the post-apocalyptic future, bounty hunters are the heroes, searching out the corporate white-collar types responsible for the world's destruction. Our film's heroes, Mary Death and a man known only as Drifter are out for the fame and the cash that come with the job.I'm finding it difficult to write about the movie without sounding like a 12 year-old fan-girl gushing about the latest boy band. It's just a blast! If you're looking for a futuristic film grounded in reality, look elsewhere. This one is a high energy, no excuses good time. Over-the-top action, insane chase scenes, weapons of every kind, spewing blood, and some the coolest characters you can find - that's what you'll find in Bounty Killer. Speaking of characters, Mary Death has to be one of the most bad-ass women ever put on screen. She's amazing! And I never expected to see Gary Busey pop-up in a small, but nice cameo. Good stuff! When you think about the limited budget director Henry Saine had to work with, Bounty Killer is even more amazing. I'm not familiar with his work, but this is a movie I would expect to see from someone like Robert Rodriguez. It's that good! And, Bounty Killer even has a similar vibe to a movie like Rodriguez's Machete - a fun action movie that doesn't take itself seriously. Everything is larger than life and done with a wink to the audience.I could literally go on and on, but I'm having trouble coming up with superlatives to describe the movie without endlessly repeating myself. If you can't tell, I loved it.

Based on a graphic novel apparently we are back to the old apocalyptic Earth scenario with gangs of bikers roaming about the place ala 'Mad Max'.The story is simple unoriginal and purely an excuse for bloody action. The world has been brought to its knees by the business world, titanic corporations hell bent on greed that set out to destroy one another but managed to wipe out the globe at the same time. Now the world (or is it just America) has been reduced to a waste land. The top business executives that initiated the mighty war have long since fled with the remaining wealth, but hot their tracks are the Bounty Killers, backed and supported by all the survivors, seeking revenge for the worlds ruin.I do like this idea in general, the way the bounty killers are highly revered celebrities that rack up kills for money fame and kill count records. I also like the idea of targeting white collar suit workers (tie wearers) as the enemy and the fact that the corporate world brought down the human race and is now treated like prey, it feels right. Obviously the film has a cynical satirical dark humorous edge to it which works in its favor but I feel they don't quite exploit this advantage well enough. The film does resort more towards the obligatory Tarantino-esque bloody fever pitch action...which is what its all about don't get me wrong but the plot had the promise of more intelligence if you ask me. Anyway the film is a graphic novel adaptation and it does exactly what it should by translating the kick ass gore to the screen in a truly gratuitous fashion, no holds barred, without a care in the world. Not to be taken seriously (naturally) the film is visually fun with a sexy scantily clad heroine, bizarre modified vehicles, lots of guns and flashing blades, face painted female warrior gypsies, people getting carved up, plenty of sex appeal and some nice animated interludes to fill in the gaps. There does seem to be a lot of these fast food straight to DVD action filled splatter flicks these days. This whole concept of in your face over the top bloody action is very common place yet a tad mundane I must say, the visual style and characters all seem to be very familiar. You see this film and you know instantly where inspiration has come from, its not hard, but I can't help but feel a certain 'Kill Bill' kick started all this type of thing...the blood gore and costumes. Mind you saying that you could also compare this ultra sexy kick ass heroine to 'Barb Wire' and 'Tank Girl', you can see that vibe going' on.The one thing I don't really like here is the use of CGI blood and effects at times which spoils the fun, although there are some nice gruesome hands on special effects in there too. For the most part the film has good production values and is decent eye candy but I just hate the reliance on CGI when we know they don't have to.I think violent mayhem and carnage sums this up pretty well, all delivered by a chick in a tight fitting outfit, so its one for the lads then. Totally crazy with larger than life characters (Gary Busey is a bad guy...say no more), bucket loads of goo, silly quickfire quips and ass. Plus points for visuals, some sweet real time gore effects and the whole idea, minus points for not taking that idea further, CGI bits and the fact they copy many other films. Its a cartoonish riot but everybody involved knows it so just go along for the ride.6/10
... View MoreA extreme post-apocalyptic action gore comedy that proves to be far more accomplished—and far funnier—that it probably has any right to be.Celebrity assassins Drifter, his nemesis/lover Mary Death, and their novice gun caddy (who's supposed to schlep a golf bag full of military assault weapons, recommending the appropriate gun for each kill) Road Warrior their way through a nuclear hellscape in which the evil Ayn Rand-inspired war criminals & their murderous henchmen all wear Armani suits with very loud matching ties; the armies of moral ambiguity are Juggalos; Western "stagecoaches" are Winnebagos hitched to synchronized Harleys; and the ultimate currency is a can of PBR. Somehow this all hangs together, albeit by partially severed limbs.Adapted from his own graphic novel by screenwriter Jason Dodson, the movie is a family affair and first feature for both Dodson and his cousin, director Henry Saine. Which, in a low-budget indie, is rarely auspicious, but works well in this case. The script and set pieces are crisp, on point, and often quite original. The acting, fight choreography & editing are impressively self-assured. Even the sfx appear far more big-budget than they can possibly be. And although Saine and Dodson aren't yet in a league with Robert Rodriguez or Yoshihiro Nishamura, they've successfully delivered an amusing, lightning-paced freshman effort with flying bloody colors.
... View More'Mad Max (1979)' meets 'Kill Bill (2004)' meets 'Sin City (2005)' in this graphic novel adaptation of 'KICKSTART' by Jason Dodson (story) and Henry Saine (artist), also the director. The film is fun to watch with its boobs, blood, beer and bounty plot. Some scenes are hilarious, especially when 'Bounty Killer' makes fun of itself. It doesn't want to be 'Blade Runner (1982)' or 'The Tournament (2009)', it simply wants to party with lots and I mean the 'Judgement Day (1991)' bunker kinda ammunition. Maria Death is played by a gift of God to man & Kristanna Lolen is a sin to watch.Marsden's 'Drifter' reminded me of Michael Biehn with that sanchez he sported in 'The Abyss (1989)' - for some odd reason. The 'Gun Caddy' is a riot. And one last thing: the action sequences are pretty decent and close to intense, quite similar to 'Ms. Death's' close up of the cleavage, however the tongue-in-cheek never loses sight of it.And it's R rated.
