I remember watching the real "Battle of the Sexes." I was 16 when it happened, and I remember my dad saying, "Well what did you expect? She's 25 years younger than he is!" But Bobby Riggs had just beaten Margaret Court, and was quite a good player. Everyone was in such anticipation of this match back then and even I thought he might well beat Billie Jean. The movie is slow to start out with, and concentrates a lot on Billie Jean's attraction and affair with another woman while still married. But it really picks up after an hour and did a good job showcasing the circus this event had become. Steve Carrell and Emma Stone were both great in it, really tried hard to portray the tennis stars they were playing honestly, and they just had to have practiced a lot to get the match right on court. Good job by both of them.

Outstanding performances and a precise attention to period detail make this terrific biopic fun to watch. Its major fault is how it deals with some of the sexual situations, which seem cliched and forced, almost farcical. It has a great 70's soundtrack and I liked it.

While this film was filled with great performances, it felt a bit too much like impersonation at points. The plot and characters were compelling enough, but the final effect felt just a little...flat. Did they capture the moment? The 70s? The significance? Sure. I just should have cared a little more. This was one of those moments when a documentary might have made more sense.

There's not enough for a film, so they mash everything they read on Wikipedia about Billie Jean King. Bobby Riggs match, the battle for pay equality; and discovery of her lesbian feelings. All are ok, but it's the gay story-line that is done the best. Shot beautifully and an interesting love triangle develops, where you have a real empathy for the husband.
