Vijay Agnihotri(Shahrukh) is a rich spoilt guy who is in love with Shivani Chopra(Madhuri Chopra). But Shivani gets married to Ashok, which drives Vijay mad. Shahrukh here plays a repellent, unredeemable character. He is intensely fuelled by passion and wants to marry Shivani at all costs. He goes to all lengths to achieve that, even killing. The second part of the film even shows the atrocities inflicted upon women. The storyline though isn't perfect and suffers from loopholes.Performance wise, both the leads deliver good performance, especially Shahrukh Khan. The musical score is rather average and sometimes seems unneeded in a film like this.

Having watched 30-something Indian movies, I may still rank as a beginner, but let me say what I've felt anyway.Besides the standard fare of song & dance numbers, and comic relief by the transvestite/eunuch threesome, I thought this could be called mostly the Passion of Shivani, and ultimately her elaborate revenge. There were no positive male roles, and SRK came over as one of the most mean men ever. Add the corrupt police officer, the sadist (female) prison warden, the brother-in-law who is served very poetic justice, choking to death on his own money......and a cliff-hanger that comes out unexpected, but makes an ultimately convincing END. Heavy drama, with political indication (police, "justice", politicians all get their accusations), and ultimately a very strong experience for this beginner. Of course, reality is something else, but all I wanted was a good show. And I got a very good one.

If you look at the film-cover and see Madhuri and Sharukh, you know you're in for a romantic drama, right? WRONG!Anjaam is what in Western Cinema would be called first class slasher movie. It has it all: an insane psychopath, and lot's of bloody deaths, with some divine justice in the end. It deals with how much a woman (shivani, played by madhuri) can take by men (the worst being Vijay played by Sharukh) before she exacts her revenge. Of course overlaid with the obvious references to Maa Durga, Madhuri takes on that revenging-part awesomely well: she even bites off a piece of her bad brother-in-law's arms with her bare teeth before choking him on his own money. As far as slasher movies go, this one is top notch - at least for the second part of the movie. But Anjaam is able to achieve something that most slasher movies of the West can never achieve. It's the political message. Because however horrid and incredible the stuff that is done to Shivani seems, it is not all that exceptional. Of course, for the film some parts were overblown. But everyday in beautiful India young girls ARE being sold as prostitutes, wives ARE being beaten just because there husbands can, et cetera, et cetera. Anjaam asks us two questions: 1) Why should women take such punishment? The answer is provided by a monologue Madhuri delivers: because they are the only ones strong enough to be able to take it. 2) What are the consequences (Anjaam) when women refuse to take it anymore? The answer is: Anjaam! Bloody gore and divine justice done by stark raving mad women empowered by Maa Durga. So, don't go watching this movie expecting romance. Expect gore and death. And in that genre, Anjaam reigns supreme.

Obviously this film is not even B class; to be honest, I don't think there are enough letters even in Devanagari to explain it's class.Yet, it is absolutely fantastic. A must-see for a Bollywood fan, an absolute-must-see for a SRK fan.Personally I just love SRK's roles as villains, those faces he makes... ahhh...The story in this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very end (just as it says at on the back of the DVD;) ) Madhuri is stunningly beautiful even after her, how to call it..., rebirth ;) (exept one tiny scene - the arm-teeth scene i'd call it, not to write a spoiler, which is also rather surprising) There are some fine songs (the one on the airport and the one on the wheel-chair) but the most important quality of this movie is that it's so surprising all the way.Plus the obsessive love motive is always great to watch.10/10 for sure (in it's category of course)
