There is a totality of character in his offering in this film, and it suggests that he spent many hours alone with the scenario trying to familiarize himself with the glasses character and understand him in a potent way. Watching him evolve from Lonesome Luke into the glasses character is a study in character development itself. The only other comedian that surpasses him at this point in terms of richness of character is Chaplin. Buster Keaton pales into insignificance as far as I'm concerned.
