I borrowed the DVD of this movie from my public library and saw it yesterday evening. I did not have high expectations, I assumed it would be just another silly romantic comedy. However, it turned out better than expected, and I was able to watch and enjoy the whole thing to the end.Obviously, this is a fairy tale, what actually happened is that the two princesses were allowed out in a group of 16 that left at 10 PM and returned at 1 AM, with none of the ridiculous and preposterous shenanigans of the movie. But it is better than your average 'romantic comedy" which I usually borrow, watch for 5 minutes, and if it is unbearably lame, I put it back in the box and return it.The plot is, of course, preposterous, and while Margaret was the wild one and her antics might be expected, Elizabeth's behavior was most unrealistic. Also very unrealistic and inaccurate were the choices of the young actresses playing the two princesses, esp. the one playing Elizabeth, who looked little like the actress playing her (eye color, build etc)If the scriptwriter, director and esp the producer made some effort towards realism, I'd give it an 8. As is, a 7.

I like watching movies where the audience is in on the big secret and the other characters have virtually no clue until they discover who is behind the mask. This sequence is done over and over in this movie and it's fun to watch the look of surprise on their faces when they find out who P1 and P2 are.Not disclosing anything at all when I say this as the title already gives it away.Nice ending too - not too over the top - just right. You will enjoy this 1) If you have a sense of humor 2) You weren't rooting for the National Socialists in the War and 3) are not too upset about the British Royal Family even though they were 100% German from 1711 to 1901. That is the source of a joke or two in the movie.

This fictional account tallies with the characters of the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret (the only member of the royal family I have seen in person) in wonderful detail (Lilibet is the name Elizabeth gave herself as a very small child--listen to George VI say it, with his stuttering problem). What a night Victory in Europe must have been! It is an amalgam of Odyssey, Pink Panther, and a Chekhov play. The characters go through a unique combination of experiences on a unique night which leaves them with a new perspective on life and how they fit into it. Meg's great oblivious question near the end is worth repeating (she asks George VI and the Queen Mother "What's a knocking shop?") You know when the moment arrives for Lizzie to assert her command as the future queen. A marvelous picture worth seeing more than once!

"This might be the only chance she gets." It is V.E. Day and the entire country of England is celebrating the victory over Hitler. Princesses Elizabeth (Gadon) and Margaret (Powley) want to celebrate like the rest of the country rather than stay home in the palace. When permission is given they are excited. When they give their chaperons the slip the two experience something that most royalty can't. True anonymity, and all the troubles that come with it. Before I begin I know I am not the target audience for this so take my review with a grain of salt. That said, the movie wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but it was still fairly generic and really felt like a PBS movie. I'm not sure how historically accurate this was but I have a hard time thinking it's even 50% right. That fact aside I was actually able to watch this without my mind wandering too much. The movie wasn't terrible but it wasn't something that made me rethink the genre either. This is watchable but really just flat and generic. If you like movies that are essentially period pieces or a fan of Downton Abbey then you will enjoy this much more than I did. Overall, not as bad as I was expecting but nothing all that amazing and really just too generic and flat for me to even have a real opinion about. I give this a C+.
