Buenos Aires in the year 2002; the economical depression has caught the country. For a first film, it handled intimate as well as larger subjects in a subtle and heart-felt manner. It gave me an emotional understanding of the economic crisis in Argentina in 2002 without lecturing. It also gave me a feeling for the influence of Italy on Argentine life. It had a lot of early Godard with no hint of imitation. Good music, too. If you're used to Hollywood films this might not be your cup of tea. If you have had a broader exposure to film from around the world, however, this will not be a slow or boring movie. The film gives the characters the time they need to portray their deeper dimensions. This is an interesting film that leaves you feeling good and caring what happens.

I'm sure there's a social commentary in this film, but it escaped my as I fast-forwarded to get past the repetitive pans of cityscapes and pointless conversations which were best left on the cutting room floor. The One Trick is that Elsa wants to visit an ex boyfriend (holiday romance) who lives in Italy, or rather Sicily as it turns out. It's just a fantasy she has in order to escape the mundanity of being a promo girl on the streets and the seediness of her friends' petty drug dealing. The lead actress is quite sexy, and the coverage of her environs and the everyday struggle to find money and survive are the best things about this flick. If it was cut to about an hour and made for TV it would have been an improvement.

Even knowing beforehand 44 votes is not something to be trusted, i was very disappointed after watching this movie. Its IMDB voting average (the day before i watched the film) was 8.1, which led me to think this was at least a good movie. Maybe someone who worked on it inflated the ratings. As i watched this movie, the impression that it was a production of Movie students got stronger and stronger, a kind of "this was the best i could have done, with the limitations i had". Poor photography, vague direction and acting that was nothing out of the ordinary, all could be the result of the collective work of people with little experience and/or talent. The lead actress is above the film average, but i was already thinking of turning the TV off and go to sleep 48 minutes after the beginning. Just a dull movie, most people would rather skip it. 4 out of 10.

Un Dia de suerte has very interesting subjects. The performances of Valentina Bassi and Fernan Miras are really good acting together. Both have experience and they are good too. She wants to go to Italy because she is in love with a man and she is looking for money, no matter what, to go. That is all the story, simple and complex at the same time because there is another sub - story (I would call) rather complex. Good music, and photography. My rating is 7 out of 10.
